What are gel wax candles?
Gel wax candles are made from a combination of mineral oil and polymer resin, creating a clear, jelly-like wax. This unique composition allows for captivating visual effects, such as layered designs, while still providing a clean and long-lasting burn. Gel wax is also a reusable material.
Are gel wax candles safe?
Yes! Gel wax is non-toxic, but it should always be burned on a heat-resistant surface, away from flammable materials. Always follow basic candle safety: never leave a burning candle unattended and keep out of reach of children and pets.
How long do gel wax candles burn?
Burn time depends on the size and type of the candle, as well as the wick used. On average, a standard gel wax candle can burn 40–80 hours. Larger container or pillar-style gel candles can burn even longer.
Does gel wax produce a strong scent?
Yes. Gel wax holds fragrance oil very well, often offering a more potent scent throw than traditional paraffin or soy candles. The scent can fill the room evenly, especially when used with multiple smaller gel candles.
Why does my gel wax candle sometimes bubble or smoke?
Bubbles can appear if the wax was poured too hot or if moisture got into the wax. Minor bubbling is normal and doesn’t affect safety. Smoke may occur if the wick is too long or contains debris—trimming the wick usually solves this.
How should I burn a gel wax candle for best results?
Trim the wick to ¼ inch before each use. Burn the candle until the top layer of wax is fully melted to prevent tunneling. Avoid moving the candle while lit. Keep candles away from drafts to maintain an even burn.
Can gel wax candles be reused?
Yes. Once a candle is fully burned, leftover gel wax can often be remelted and recast. Decorative embeds can sometimes be removed and reused in new gel wax projects.
Are gel wax candles eco-friendly?
Gel wax is mineral oil-based, which is not biodegradable, but it is reusable and long-lasting, reducing overall waste. Many users choose gel candles for their longevity and creative versatility. M.ixology chooses to use and reuse gel wax for the detailed nature of candle cocktail designs. We encourage our customers to send us their old candles back for reuse in new candles.
